Winter Prep List: How to Get Ready for Winter

Are you prepared for winter? It's not too late to get ready, but you'll want to take care of some important tasks in order to make sure you're prepared for the cold weather. This winter prep list will help you get ready both inside and outside your home.

Winter Prep List: How to Get Ready for Winter

1. Check Your Heating System

The first thing you'll want to do is make sure your heating system is in good working order. This includes getting it serviced and making sure there are no leaks. You should also check your insulation to ensure that your home is as energy-efficient as possible.

If you have a fireplace, now is the time to get it cleaned and ready for use. Make sure you have plenty of wood chopped and stored so that you can keep warm all winter long. If you use heating oil, order your supply now so that you don't run out in the middle of a cold snap.

2. Control Drafts

One of the best ways to save money on your heating bill is to make sure your home is well-insulated. Check for drafts around doors and windows, and seal them with weatherstripping or caulk. You can also install draft guards at the bottom of doors.

Another way to control drafts is to hang heavy curtains over windows, which will help keep heat in your home.

3.Stock Warm Clothes and Bedding

Now is the time to break out the heavy blankets and warm clothes. Make sure you have plenty of socks, hats, gloves, and scarves. If you don't have a winter coat, now is the time to buy a blanket hoodie. It's also a good idea to have extra bedding on hand in case of power outages. Keep a few blankets in your car so that you're prepared for anything.

4. Prepare Your Car

If you live in an area where it snows, you'll want to make sure your car is prepared for winter weather. This means getting new tires with good tread, as well as making sure your windshield wipers are in good condition. You should also keep a shovel and some salt in your trunk so that you can clear any snow or ice that accumulates.

It's also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car. This should include a first-aid kit, jumper cables, flares, and a flashlight. You may also want to consider keeping a bag of sand or cat litter in your trunk so that you can get traction if you get stuck in the snow.

5. Winterize Your Home

There are a few things you can do to winterize your home and prevent any problems. First, make sure you clean out your gutters and downspouts so that they're free of leaves and debris. This will help prevent ice dams from forming on your roof.

You should also disconnect any hoses from outdoor faucets so that they don't freeze and burst. And if you have a pool, make sure it's properly covered so that it doesn't crack in the cold weather.

6. Protect Your Pipes

One of the most important things on this winter prep list is to protect your pipes. If the temperature dips below freezing, any exposed pipes could freeze and burst. To prevent this from happening, you can insulate your pipes with foam tubing or wrap them in newspapers.

You should also let your faucets drip a little bit so that water can flow through the pipes and prevent them from freezing. And if you're going to be away from home for an extended period of time, make sure you shut off the water to your home and drain all the pipes.

By following this winter prep list, you can be sure that you'll be ready for anything the winter throws your way. Stay safe and warm all season long!
