Stellantis asks Vulcan Energy more than triple sustainable lithium that agreed with Renault

Stellantis's purchasing manager has entered into a binding agreement with Vulcan Energy, the German 'green' lithium supplier. By 2030 Stellantis estimates that more than 70% of its sales in Europe and 40% in the United States will be "low emission" vehicles, so it needs many, many batteries.

For this, the supply of raw materials must be ensured, and one of them is lithium hydroxide. Vulcan Energy extracts it from brine in the Upper Rhine Valley (Germany), carrying out the transformation with the help of geothermal energy so as not to produce carbon emissions and incidentally consume less water. The process is more sustainable, so much so that they call it Zero Carbon Lithium. According to the company, they have access to the largest source of lithium in Europe.

The binding agreement contemplates the supply of 81,000 tons -at least- to 99,000 tons. These figures multiply by a little more than three the order that Renault has made to Vulcan, between 26,000 and 32,000 tons. It is a five-year supply agreement and the delivery of the merchandise will begin in the year 2026. The monetary amount involved has not been made public.

Stellantis asks Vulcan Energy for more than triple of sustainable lithium that agreed with Renault

Stellantis has committed to invest more than 30,000 million euros until 2025 to electrify its multiple ranges, considering that it has 14 brands. For the production of batteries it will have three facilities, through its ACC joint-venture with Daimler and TotalEnergies in France and Germany, and another in Italy.

With this binding agreement, Stellantis tries to guarantee its supply of lithium, which if there are already cakes for it, there will be many more in the second half of the decade. This agreement is linked to the fact that Vulcan Energies begins its operations at a commercial level and that the product obtained achieves all the certifications and characteristics desired by Stellantis.
