Pogacar wins the prestigious Golden Bike ahead of Roglic and Van Aert

The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), 23, a double winner of the Tour de France, has been chosen Golden Bike for the best international cyclist of 2021, while the award in the French field went to the world champion Julian Alaphilippe.

Pogacar, winner this season of the Tour de France, Liège Bastoña Liège, Il Lombardía, Tirreno Adriatico, and number one in the UCI world ranking, has been chosen by Velo Magazine as the best of the year, ahead of his compatriot Primoz Roglic, winner of the Vuelta and winner of the prize last year, and the Belgian Wout Van Aert.

The podium is the same as last year, except that on that occasion, Roglic was the winner ahead of his friend and rival.

In French cycling, the best for the aforementioned magazine has been, for the third consecutive year, Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), double conqueror of the world champion rainbow jersey.

Three Spaniards appear on the list of winners of the Golden Bicycle, similar to the Ballon d'Or awarded by France Football magazine.

Alberto Contador won the award four times (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2014), Miguel Indurain twice (1992 and 1993), and the last one, Alejandro Valverde in 2018.

A very Spanish award

Contador is the cyclist who has won this award the most times, in addition to being second in 2010, since Vélo D'Or annulled Lance Armstrong's five awards in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004. He is followed by Christopher Froome with three ( 2013, 2015 and 2017).

Up to seven Spanish cyclists have stood on the podium of this prestigious recognition since its creation in 1992. Indurain was second in 1994 and 1995 after winning the first two editions and in that last year, Abraham Olano was third.

Óscar Freire was third in 2004 and Alejandro Valverde, a unique case, second in 2006 before being third in 2014 and winning the award in 2018. Finally, Carlos Sastre and 'Purito' Rodríguez were third in 2008 and 2012, respectively.
