Kenzo returns to Japanese roots at a historic moment

Nigo, 51, thus becomes the second Asian designer at the head of a European haute couture brand, along with Filipino-American Rhuigi Villaseñor de Bally. His appointment represents a milestone in the broader struggle of the luxury industry with questions about racism and diversity.

Both are Japanese, both studying at the same fashion university in Tokyo decades apart, both have an artistic vision of East and West and consider themselves fashion code breakers. The playroom is the same place where Takada performed his inaugural fashion show in 1970.

Nigo's close friend, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West applauded in the middle of the ancient bookstores alongside an audibly enthusiastic audience after their vibrant creations were revealed.

Nigo gained world renown for the first time with the urban clothing brand A Bathing Ape that began in 1993. Several decades later, at the head of one of the largest brands of LVMH's luxury giant, Kenzo, those vibrant colors and street prints were evident in a creative fusion with some traditional Kenzo themes. The best time? When an unexpected decorated strap, which evokes the military, appeared in a beautiful tailor-made minimalist bronze wool coat. It was subtle but effective.

The giant declaration boots made of padded jacket material were the leitmotiv of the Sacai parade of Chitose Abe.

With earrings, zippers, laces, ribs and buttons, the original footwear seemed ready for a landing, presenting an avant-garde aesthetic for the autumn / winter season.

On the other hand, an artistic collaboration with the Japan-born New York-based artist, Madsaki, produced some reflection in the form of large spray paint prints and embroidery on sweatshirts and on the back of the jackets.

"Sheple Zombies and Kool-Aid," he said, referring to how people who follow trends cannot think independently.

It was a good message to the house that prides itself on its originality.

Abe was also in a nostalgic state of mind, reproducing themes he had introduced into his first shows, such as lingerie, which was integrated here as stitches of bra cups made in jackets.
