Checo Pérez: "In the end I had to retire because the engine was about to burst"

The Mexican driver Sergio 'Checo' Pérez was unable to crown a brilliant race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, having to leave the track on lap 56 due to a mechanical failure in the engine, when he was rolling in the third position and a safety car appeared on the track.

For this reason, Checo regretted that the team could not win the constructors' championship, although he said he was happy for the drivers' title obtained by his Red Bull teammate, Max Verstappen.

"Max has been an excellent teammate, a great person and the team in general, it's a shame we didn't have the constructors' championship, I had to retire because the engine was going to explode and we didn't want another safety car" .

The Mexican said he was happy to be able to bother Lewis Hamilton in the race and help Max get closer, when he lost time for pitting.

"Happy for Max because I think he was the driver who deserved it the most, he's driven amazingly all season. In Hamilton's place it's hard to have a driver hurting you but I've done it all for my team and that's what I'll stay with."

Thus, Checo closes the season in fourth position in the drivers' championship and with the hope that in 2022 he will have a historic season in Formula 1.

Finally, the Mexican expressed his feelings about the end of the campaign.

"Very happy for everything, for Max and for my team! In the end we were able to support and make a difference in the result. A pity not being able to finish the race with another podium in the bag, but happy with the season.
