The reunion of Flavio Briatore and Fernando Alonso in Alpine: impossible dream or real possibility?

In Formula 1 there are recurring rumors that, from time to time, come back to the surface. The entry of some brand of the VAG group (Audi or Volkswagen, fundamentally), for example, seems closer than ever, as they have confessed from McLaren, but for now it is nothing more than that: a possibility. In recent times, another comment has been added to the gossip: will Flavio Briatore return to Fernando Alonso's side?

Few people of character as marked as that of the Italian tycoon have walked through the paddock. Promoter of the Benetton empire (both clothing and Formula 1) with the first Michael Schumacher, he was the man who gave Alonso the opportunity to reach a champion team, Renault, with which he achieved his greatest milestones. It is no coincidence that years later the relationship between the two is one of very deep and sincere friendship, in which Briatore's business advice is very much taken into account by Alonso.

Now that Alpine is undergoing a process of internal revolution with many names on the table, the possibility of his return has intensified. At the moment it is no more than a dream of many fans eager to recover old flavors of glory, but his profile fits for a role that, really, is still representative... more or less.

A symbolic position, a luxury advisor

Briatore's importance to the Enstone team is evident. Four drivers' world championships (two with Schumacher and two with Alonso) make him a historic boss for what is now Alpine, although that does not mean that they will recover him for that position. Barring any last-minute surprises, Otmar Szafnauer will be ultimately responsible for what happens on the track with the blue cars. In that case, what would Briatore paint, if he records?

His position would be that of ambassador, adviser or consultant. That is to say: the same position that Alain Prost had. At 71 years old, Briatore still has a strategic vision for Formula 1 beyond what happens on the track. Politically seasoned (he came to consider a serious leap in the always turbulent parliamentary situation in his country), Alpine needs someone who knows how to move well behind the scenes, touch certain shoulders and whisper to the right ears.

His advice could come in very handy to Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, and to Szafnauer himself, in addition to what his presence in the box might mean for his good friend Alonso.

Beyond that, his charge would be purely testimonial. Whoever expects to see Briatore raising his drivers' fists in the event of victory, or throwing their helmets against the wall before heading to talk to the stewards, is wrong. The Italian has long since left the stress of Formula 1 (he was forced to do so for forcing Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash in Singapore 2008, the famous 'crashgate') to focus on his chain of ultra-luxury nightclubs, the clubs ' Billionaire'. For him, a position at Alpine would be another diversion.

His nationality plays in his favor. Luca de Meo, head of the Renault Group, is Italian like him and holds him in great esteem. Although it is not decisive, having a similar competition philosophy can also serve as a guarantee that the objectives are well defined.

But for now, nothing more. Between the dream of the nostalgic and the signature there are many steps to take. Perhaps this Formula 1 is no longer for vehement men like Briatore, but... who is not going to like a Flavio strolling through the paddock again?
