From fashion to trash: what to do with the clothes we no longer wear?

Fashion for decades has become a universal language that not only expresses personality, but also modifies itself as an active part of social causes that seek to become visible. Indeed, consumerism has led to the four usual launch seasons being left behind and the 'fast fashion' concept that basically responds to the disproportionate marketing of clothing.

In order to talk about the magnitude of this problem, it must be borne in mind that the fashion industry is the second most polluting in the world. In fact, to get an idea, making a Jean takes 7,500 liters of water, more or less what a person consumes in two to three years of his or her life.

To the above, it is added that with the disproportionate production of clothes also comes a concept called 'trash fashion' or 'junk clothing'. This term refers to all clothing left in containers, new, with failures due to the low quality of production or never sold.

How's the region?

Thinking about the Atacama desert (located in Chile) brings to our head the arid natural landscapes that for many become an unfathomable destination when traveling in South America. For large producers, however, this place is quite a dump of textile waste. There, it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 tons of clothing, in many cases even new.

The desert became this dump because it is located near the port city Iquique, where no taxes are paid and therefore, the arrival of containers with merchandise is common.

As clothes that do not pay taxes, once they are selected for sale, the remaining garments cannot be legally dumped because it is regulated by law that no clothes are received in dumpsters because they prevent the soils from hydrating and the damage generated increases.

How is Colombia on this issue?

Although Colombia has a large textile production, with the rise of responsible initiatives, entrepreneurs and brands have made commitments to create second opportunities for clothing or responsible clothing production.

In fact, according to Investigcolombia, the country has positioned itself as the first exporter of flat fabric clothing in South America in products such as bras, jeans, girdles and control clothing. It should be noted that the fashion System accounts for 8.5% of the country's industrial GDP and is vital for the smooth functioning of the national economy.

And according to the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce, after the drop in sales with the pandemic, the recovery of the sector has been faster than budgeted, with even an improvement in spending in the pockets of Colombians. However, it is also estimated that the fashion System in Colombia will take at least 2 years to return to the 2019 figures, according to initial projections by Raddar and Inexmoda.

What to do as buyers?

In dialogue with Caracol Radio, Laura Rojas (project leader in responsible industries) said that the panorama in Colombia is encouraging considering that many of the myths surrounding second-rate clothing have already been left behind. "every time we fight these myths a little more, there are a lot of ventures in Bogotá, Medellín and Bucaramanga where one can find treasures. There we can talk about clothes from the 1920s or 1930s, when the clothes were best made."

As a buyer, Rojas explains that repairing is a pretty viable alternative, when we talk about reducing low consumption. "if it is stained with chlorine you can look for a tutorial and give a new touch to the clothes. It is not always necessary to throw it away. You can also take it to a tailor and modify it completely to generate new garments. In the end, it is a process of revolution," he said.

How to change consumption habits?

Surely when you have gone to buy clothes you have faced thinking of certain garments for a single occasion and that in the first place means not having a sustainable thought, because with the passing of the days that garment will not be useful for other events. "one can access certain garments that can be combined with other garments to generate utility and extend life to them," Rojas added.

If, for example, you definitely want to access new garments, you could start looking for your style in second-rate stores or brands that work with reduced production or on sustainable projects such as ex-combatants, mothers heads of household, etc., to name a few.

On the other hand, today there are platforms dedicated to the exchange of second-rate garments to renew clothes and extend their lives. There are also hundreds of Instagram brands that have been released and once the algorithm recognizes that you are looking for these industries, it shows you more brands so you can expand your panorama.

Finally, if you want to change the chip and want to explore a little more, you can approach establishments dedicated to the exchange of clothes, second purchase or just go and meet, perhaps that Jean that you wanted so much but which cost 500,000 pesos may appear for a much lower value.
