5 Fantastic Winter Getaways in the Northeast and Midwest Regions

Courtesy Stowe Mountain Resort

En español

Of course you can travel south for warmer winter temperatures, but it can be just as wonderful to take advantage of the winter season and explore the vacation spots of the north, where there are many things to do indoors and outdoors free (but don't forget to bundle up!). Here are five favorite places in Vermont, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio. Be sure to check the latest COVID-19 protocols at each destination and to adhere to CDC guidelines for safe travel.

Stowe, Vermont

Visit this quaint ski town in northern Vermont, with its smoking chimneys and icicles hanging from the eaves. Nestled among the evergreen peaks of the Green Mountains, Stowe embodies the true charm of an old-fashioned New England winter. Begin with a stroll down Main Street, where the steeple of Stowe Community Church marks the welcoming town center and shops like the Stowe Mercantile and Shaw's General Store—with bulk candy and warm woolens—reminisce of a bygone era. Visit the Stowe Town Meetinghouse, dating from 1818, where the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum tells the story of snow sports in the state, with vintage sports equipment, vintage chairlifts and other memorabilia ($5 suggested donation) .

Travel north on State Route 108, better known as Mountain Road, to Stowe Mountain Resort, one of the region's most popular ski areas, now in its 85th season. Tucked away at the base of Mansfield Mountain, Vermont's highest peak, the resort offers alpine skiers plenty of classic trails, including Toll Road, a smooth, winding route through the woods. Cross-country skiers and snowshoeers should head straight for the Trapp Family Lodge (yes, the von Trapp family from the movie "The Sound of Music"), where more than 35 miles of immaculately groomed trails span 6,000 acres. from the property wind through idyllic scenery.End a fun day with a pint or two at von Trapp Bierhall, where refreshing family-brewed beers accompany a menu that includes delicious Austrian-inspired food.

Where to stay: The Trapp Family Lodge has been hosting guests in its charming European-style chalet since 1950 (rooms start at $200). Or you can opt for the Field Guide Lodge, an elegant accommodation that serves as a base camp in the heart of the city (from $179).
