'Tiger King 2': the reason why Carole Baskin and Joe Exotic do not appear

Tiger King couldn't have come at a better time. The monstrous docuseries about real-life crimes arrived on Netflix shortly after the coronavirus hit and half the world was ordered to stay home. With little else to do, we almost all turned our eyes to Joe Exotic.

Born Joseph Allen Schreibvogel, the self-proclaimed king of the tigers is the former owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. He is now serving a 22-year federal prison sentence for violating the Endangered Species Act and for attempting to murder his nemesis and series co-star Carole Baskin. Baskin is the owner of Big Cat Rescue and considers herself an animal activist. Plus, she may have fed a pack of tigers to her ex-husband, which Exotic and perhaps the Netflix producers like to suggest, but that's neither one thing nor the other. Regardless, 64 million people tuned in to watch Exotic and Baskin parade through their respective animal kingdoms and try to dethrone the other.

Along the way, viewers met an incredible array of rotating misfits, including Travis Maldonado, Joe Exotic's ex-partner who "accidentally" shot himself as part of a dare gone wrong in 2017, and John Finlay, her ex-husband. gap-toothed man who never knew where his shirt was and now claims their marriage was a publicity stunt. By the way, Finlay has already had his teeth fixed. And who could forget Jeff Lowe, the tanned Las Vegas legend who usurped control of the Oklahoma Zoo when Exotic went to jail.

'Tiger King 2': la razón por la que Carole Baskin y Joe Exotic no aparecen

With a smash hit on their hands and numerous memorable personalities at their disposal, Netflix naturally signed on for a sequel. Tiger King 2 was released on Wednesday, but the two main stars of the original series were absent: Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin. According to various media outlets, Baskin declined to take part in the sequel, citing issues with how she was portrayed in the first season. In her place, she appeared on Dancing with the Stars and got a record score. She now has her own show on Discovery+ called Carole Baskin's Cage Fight. In the series, she and other activists hunt down animal abusers, including Lowe, and try to bring them their own version of jungle justice.

As for Joe Exotic, he does technically appear in the second season, but only briefly and from behind a thick sheet of glass. And it is that Exotic is still in prison despite having publicly asked former President Trump to pardon him on multiple occasions. His call to President Biden has also gone unanswered.

Things are going better for Exotic in his legal battle. In July, a federal appeals court ruled that the charges against him were wrong during the sentencing phase and required that he recalculate his prison sentence based on one count of attempted murder, not two. If things go his way, Exotic could get a shorter sentence.

Meanwhile, Exotic's attorney, John Phillips, appears to be preparing for a possible mistrial. According to The New York Times , Marshall claims to have collected affidavits from various Tiger King cast members, including former zoo manager John Reinke and even Jeff Lowe. In a September affidavit, Lowe suggests that the hit-and-run plot against Baskin was staged.

Exotic has managed to find multiple ways to keep himself busy behind bars. In addition to dealing with what he claims to be an aggressive form of prostate cancer, he has also been writing a book. Tiger King: The Official Tell-All Memoir is out next week.
