Emerging Young Designers: Anthony Huber

Saskia Bouillé and Joaquín Saccone present us with a new fashion editorial with the designs of the young designer Anthony Huber aka Hubby

“Uncorporate” is the fashion editorial presented by the stylist Saskia Bouillé together with the photographer Joaquín Saccone. In the photographs they show the latest work of the promising fashion designer recently graduated from Polimoda Firenze Anthony Huber, better known as Hubby. The story becomes a reinterpretation of the work of the Swedish photographer who captured the absurdity of offices in the late 1990s, Lars Tunbjork.

We have been able to chat with the Luxembourgish designer so that he can explain more about the designs of his latest collection that we can see in the photographs of the Uncorporate fashion editorial.

Where and what have you studied? How was the experience? I first studied my degree in Paris and in June I graduated from the Master of Fashion Design at Polimoda Florence. My three years in Paris were incredible. I acquired a solid foundation in sewing, pattern making and draping. I then moved to Italy and really enjoyed my experience at Polimoda. There I found the creative freedom I was looking for and studying in a city like Florence was very inspiring.

How was the creation of this capsule collection that we can see in the “Uncorporate” editorial? This collection was made between February and July of this year. My approach was much more artistic and intuitive. I am also very grateful to the teachers who guided me in the design process. I think especially of my mentor Elisa Palomino, who worked with John Galliano at Dior for years.

Do you already have your own brand? My brand is called Hubby. A nickname I got related to my last name.

Tell us about the concept behind your designs. The MA collection is inspired by my origins. It's influenced by my father and his work environment and the life we're missing out on. A blurred life that goes by. The collection is also inspired by the work of Lars Tunbjörk. A famous Swedish photographer known for his deadpan portraits of office spaces and suburban lifestyles captured in the 1990s. It's also about this feeling of trying to escape this frame that we're forced to fit into.

What kind of audience are your designs targeting? My designs are made for people who want to be the true version of themselves. I celebrate differences and defend tolerance. I am trying to design and promote a more agender view of fashion.

Could you define in a few words your style when designing clothes? Extravagant and versatile. So I could label her genderless funkywear.

What are your expectations in the world of fashion? What is your big goal? Since the fashion industry has a disastrous impact on the environment and the damage increases as the industry grows, I would say that I am trying to find a solution for that. I wish we could find a solution to make fashion more regenerative. We definitely have to stop producing and start reusing.

What are your main sources of inspiration? I would say that my main source of inspiration is music. I'm obsessed with music from the late 70's and early 80's and electronic music from the 90's. I try to translate the energy these genres make me feel into my clothes. Contemporary artists like Tony Cragg, Erwin Wurm or Sarah Lucas are a main source of inspiration. I like to work with deformation and bring out the beauty of something grotesque.

Are you focused exclusively on launching your firm? At the moment I want to gain professional experience and delve into the fashion industry and understand how it works before launching my own brand. I currently work for AV Vattev, a London-based menswear brand.

Is it difficult to earn money working in fashion nowadays? How do you see the situation of young designers? Yes. Right now the situation is quite complicated for young designers. I am surrounded by people facing the same situation as me. We are all struggling to get paid work. Even after completing my specialization, I have a hard time finding companies that are willing to pay me for my work.

Would you put aside your current job at Av Vattev to focus on your own brand? My internship ends around March. I would love to move to New York as now the situation has become easier to travel and work there for a few months. I would love to work for Marc Jacobs and continue my journey in the world of fashion within his team.

How do you plan to stand out in a world as competitive as this? I think the fashion industry is slowly changing and more and more emerging designers are running their own successful brands because more people are aware of how damaging fast fashion is to the world. I guess you have to be surrounded by creative people and make sure you come up with something new. I do this with passion and will try to show honest work.

If you could choose one person to wear your designs, who would it be? I would have loved to dress Cameo, which is an American funk band, but nowadays I'd say Lil Nas X.

What is the best way to promote your brand? I would say that the best way to promote my work would be to appear in magazines. I also think that Instagram has become a huge platform that provides incredible visibility and opportunities for young emerging designers. I would love to make more garments for different artists and their performances.

Tell us about other projects you are currently working on… I am currently working on a mini capsule collection made from recycled cycling jerseys. I'll be selling it on Depop early next year. I am planning to work on small projects in different mediums along with my personal brand. I have started drawing again and plan to paint again.
