Facebook officially changes its name, now it is called Meta; we explain why

Colombia Mayor, October 2021

ABBA announces that it is disbanding

Mark Zuckerberg announced this Thursday that the company he runs, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, among others, will be renamed Meta to reflect his commitment to virtual reality. The American businessman has revealed the name change within the framework of the Connect conference on augmented reality and virtual reality, in which he has once again explained his vision of what the company has dubbed the 'metaverse', a one hundred percent parallel reality to which he wants Meta to allocate a large part of its investments in the coming years.

The name change exclusively affects the umbrella company of all these applications, so that the social network will continue to be called Facebook and the change will have almost no effect for the vast majority of users. This is a move very similar to the one carried out by Google in 2015, when it restructured the company's internal organization and created a parent company, Alphabet, with several subsidiaries that include Google itself. The name change will be reflected in the New York stock market as of December 1, when the firm that is now listed under the acronym FB will be listed under MVRS.

In the presentation of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg has shown some examples of what in his opinion should be the future of humanity in the 'metaverse', in which people would move with their personalized avatars, they would dress them with digital clothes that they would buy inside from that same universe and would attend events such as concerts. In mid-October, Facebook announced the creation of 10,000 new jobs in Europe over the next five years with the aim, precisely, of shaping the 'metaverse'.
