Chilean Lawyers Create Intellectual Property 'Boutique'

Chilean lawyer Marisol Beytia , who founded Beytia & Cia. 11 years ago, joined her colleagues Javiera Badilla Veliz and Agustina Paz Davis Komlos to create Beytia Badilla Davis , a boutique specialized in intellectual property and brand development. The firm also provides services in the areas of copyright and software, new technologies and domain names.

Beytia values the experience of Badilla and Davis in trademark law to fulfill the purpose of promoting and protecting the innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship of its clients inside and outside the country.

The first rapprochement between them took place in 2018. “At first it was almost a fantasy that was born at a lunch with friends. After several months of talking, in 2019 we met and made the decision that this project would become a reality once and for all, as soon as Javiera and Agustina finished their commitments in their previous jobs”, she commented in statements offered to LexLatin . This is how in April of this year they decided to start this new stage, following their convictions and passion for work. Now they are working on the launch of the firm and on the corporate image. “Which makes us very satisfied, especially since we are three partners breaking into a market traditionally dominated by men. We are legal entrepreneurs and we are tremendously proud of that,” she stated.

In the team so far there are only the three of them, all with the position of partners. Although their plans contemplate hiring more lawyers in the short term, they will seek to make the size of the team consistent with their strategy of providing direct and personalized assistance to their clients. They also plan to expand the client portfolio and create new business areas related to Intellectual Property in the technological field.

Its clients include Club Deportivo Palestino (soccer), Luveck Medical (laboratory), Café Berlin, Epaté, Allnuts, Today's Easy Cook and Hacedor de Pan (gastronomy), Innovaciones Productos y Servicios, Armonía Wines, Colmenares de Pirque, Miel Dama Real and Rosalinda (retail and products), Raya, Mara, Camila Gazmuri, Joyfitters, Wild and Lama (clothing and accessories), Caliber 71 (“Escape Pact”) and El Sueño de Volar (cinema and entertainment), Cultainer (editorial , education and culture), Norden (health), AG Producers of Olives and Olive Oil of Chile (trade associations), UPLANNER, DarkStore, Infomed, Simple Agency, Terrawind and MBC Lawyers (financial and services area).

She assures that her clients received the news in a positive way, taking into account that the relationship with the new partners is direct, apart from the fact that it implies a greater degree of expertise in specific areas and an important contribution of experience and knowledge. Most of the clients had previously worked with one of the partners. A good part of the portfolio comes from Beytia & Cia. Other clients have come by reference from the positions they held in other firms.

Regarding the challenges and opportunities of undertaking in the legal market, Badilla said that the business model of the old legal firms has been becoming obsolete as new technologies have simplified the filing and registration of intellectual and industrial property. "That is why what clients are looking for is the difference in legal advice for enforcement, litigation and protection of their technology or creations before, during and after development," he explains, adding that this requires niche lawyers who perform specialized services and at the same time. measure of each client, considering that there are many matters that are not regulated by law.

For Davis, an important challenge is to stand out among so many firms that see the same materials as the boutique they are creating. "How will we do it? With a direct and personalized treatment with our clients; with high-quality advice and competitive rates,” he noted.

He believes that the pandemic, in part, is an opportunity, since small and medium-sized companies have proliferated, which often start without much knowledge of the intellectual property protection they need. "There we are, close, clear and very precise regarding the advice we provide," he stressed. The differential of Beytia, Badilla and Davis is the innovation and quality of their services, as well as adaptation to the era of technology and data and a modern and avant-garde vision in terms of brand protection strategies and other property rights. intellectual.
