Almost a hundred major fashion brands are linked to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest | Interference

A report published this Monday, November 29, prepared by the international organization Stand.Earth -an environmental NGO created in Canada in 2000 and with a presence in the United States, dedicated to the defense of forests- reported 74 fashion brands with links to the deforestation of the Amazon jungle, due to cattle ranching in the area and leather as an element derived from this activity.

Brands such as Zara, H&M, Armani, Nike, Adidas, Skechers, Puma, Lacoste and Prada are some of those mentioned in the investigation, which use leather produced in Brazil from the Amazon for the manufacture of sneakers, shoes, bags and wallets.

Stand.earth Research Group specializes in chain of custody research, identifying and tracking raw materials as they move through complex supply chains and eventually become consumer products.

From the livestock industry, derives a large meat, dairy and leather industry, textiles that according to research, are exported mainly to China and other Asian countries.

In this investigation, they were involved in finding out about the cattle industry as the main driver of deforestation in the Amazon, analyzing vast areas of the jungle with maps, satellites and drones, in addition to processing more than 500,000 customs data. From the livestock industry, derives a large meat, dairy and leather industry, textiles that according to research, are mainly exported to China and other Asian countries. Most of the products of the big fashion brands are manufactured there.

The leather business is relevant to the Brazilian economy, yet most of the deforestation of its jungle has been carried out illegally to expand cattle ranching. Brazil has in its territory the largest number of cattle in the world, with 215 million animals. 80% of the leather they produce is exported and it is an industry that represents more than a billion dollars a year, according to data from 2020.

Almost a hundred major brands in the are linked to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest | Interference

One of the largest companies in leather production in Brazil is JBS, which, according to the study, is linked to 91 thousand deforested hectares in the Amazon, carried out between March 2019 and March 2021, of which more than 80 % could be illegal deforestation (without the corresponding permits). This problem also occurs in the manufacture of leather by other Brazilian companies with less production, such as Minerva and Fuga Couros.

JBS recently committed to achieving zero deforestation across its global supply chain by 2035, something environmental groups have called insufficient.

Although the study managed to identify 74 brands that are working with leather linked to deforestation in the Amazon, the organization believes that Brazilian leather may be used in more than a hundred brands worldwide. Several of the brands mentioned in the research had forest care policies and had promised to help prevent deforestation.

In 2019 and 2020, Brazil faced criticism from world leaders for not doing more to protect the forest from large forest fires.

"Given that a third of the companies surveyed have some kind of policy in place, [it would be expected] they would have an impact on deforestation," Greg Higgs, one of the researchers involved in the report, told the British newspaper The Guardian.

"The rate of deforestation is increasing, so the policies have no material effect," he added.

In 2019 and 2020, Brazil faced criticism from world leaders for not doing more to protect the forest from large forest fires. On that occasion, Amazonian environmental and indigenous activists pointed to the cattle industry as one of those responsible for the fires, which are often intentionally set to transform tracts of jungle into deforested places for cattle ranching. Meanwhile, deforestation in the Amazon ecosystem continues at an alarming rate.
